Dear President Tinubu,
I commend your administration’s bold decision to remove the long-standing fuel subsidies. This move was necessary and timely, given the immense strain these subsidies placed on public finances. However, to mitigate the impact on the masses, I propose the following measures:
- Refinery Optimization Deadline:
- Set a clear deadline for all government-owned refineries to operate at optimum capacity. Doing so can reduce our reliance on imported petroleum products and enhance energy security.
- Investing in refinery infrastructure will create jobs, boost local production, and reduce our vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations.
- Licensing for Private Refineries:
- Issue licences to companies interested in establishing refineries within Nigeria. Guarantee them a steady supply of crude oil.
- Encouraging private investment in refining will create economic opportunities and position Nigeria as a regional hub for refined products.
- Exporting Refined Products:
- Instead of exporting raw crude oil, prioritise exporting refined products. This strategy will add value to our exports and diversify our revenue streams.
- Refining locally and exporting finished products can strengthen our economy and reduce our dependence on external markets.
- Transparency and Accountability:
- Communicate openly with the public about the subsidy removal and explain how the funds previously allocated to subsidies will now be redirected.
- Invest these savings in critical infrastructure projects, education, healthcare, and social welfare programs. Let Nigerians see the tangible benefits of this policy shift.
President Tinubu, your leadership during this pivotal moment is crucial. By implementing these pragmatic steps, I believe we can transform Nigeria’s energy sector, improve lives, and build a more resilient economy.
Yours sincerely,
Godson Akinsanya
